Oneida Health is an independent 101-bed acute care community hospital and a 160-bed extended-care facility (ECF) and short-term rehab facility licensed by the State of New York and operated by Oneida Health Systems, Inc., a New York not-for-profit corporation. Summary

This position has responsibility for maintaining high standards of professional nursing services in the management of an entire unit on a given shift. Special emphasis is placed on instruction, supervision and coordination of nursing personnel and all related functions of a unit. The work is performed under the general supervision of the Director or Assistant Director of Nursing Services with considerable latitude permitted for the exercise of independent judgment in planning and carrying out assigned duties. Does related work as required.

Responsibilities

  • Assumes responsibility for the delivery of all nursing care on unit through delegation, direction, and supervision of all subordinate employees;
  • Performs daily rounds on unit, visiting every resident to assess the needs of resident and staff performance;
  • Interacts with facility nursing supervisor regarding resident concerns, staff and unit needs on daily basis;
  • Promotes and maintains good relationships with residents, families, and staff;
  • Communicates effectively with physicians to ascertain appropriate MD intervention accomplished to maintain qualify resident care;
  • Prepares specific work assignments for all personnel taking into consideration resident care needs as well as ability, training, and education of employees;
  • Develops, implements, and maintains currency of individual nursing care plans based on interdisciplinary assessments;
  • Holds staff meetings to address concerns, needs, and inform of pertinent happenings;
  • Evaluates the quality/quantity of care rendered on unit by preparing subordinate evaluations based on monitoring performance, progress in improvement, and development of weak areas;
  • Issues evaluations in a timely/consistent manner;
  • Encourages each employee’s self development by assigning attendance and encouraging participation in in-service programs, quality assurance monitors, and staff conferences;
  • Ensures proper supplies and equipment are available to staff and are in good repair;
  • Assists in coordinating the orientation of new employees with Staff Development Coordinator and Director of Nursing;
  • Prepares initial staffing by coordinating holiday/PDO requests;
  • Other duties as assigned.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

  • Thorough knowledge of professional nursing techniques, their relation to medical and surgical practices, and skill in their application;
  • Good knowledge of clinical division management, unit management, and supply distribution practices;
  • Ability to supervise the administration of therapeutic measures prescribed;
  • Ability to secure the cooperation of others;
  • Ability to plan and supervise the work of others;
  • Ability to understand and carry out technical, oral, and written instructions;

WORK SCHEDULE

  • Day, Evening or Night Shift as established in order to meet resident care demand.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • Graduation from a regionally accredited or NYS registered four year college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing, AND One (1) year of experience as a Registered Professional Nurse, which shall have been in a supervisory position; or
  • Graduation from an approved three (3) year school of professional nursing AND two (2) years of experience as a Registered Professional Nurse, and (1) year of which shall have been in a supervisory position; or
  • Graduation from a regionally accredited or NYS registered two (2) year college with an Associate Degree in Nursing AND three (3) years of experience as a Registered Professional Nurse, one (1) year of which shall have been in a supervisory position; or
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined within the limits of 1, 2, and 3 above.

Licensure:

  • Eligibility for a license issued by the State of New York to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse; Possession of the license at the date of hire.
