Safe Over-The-Counter Medications You Can Take While Pregnant

Over-the-counter (OTC) medicines are drugs you can buy without a prescription. In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration decides whether a medicine is safe enough to sell over-the-counter. It is important to take medicines correctly, you should never take OTC medicines longer or in higher doses than the label recommends.

MEDICATIONS: The most important medication to take when you are pregnant is your Prenatal Vitamins. However the most common phone we receive in our office is for what over the counter medications are safe. Here is our list.

SALINE NASAL SPRAY: 100% plain for nasal congestion. You should call us if you develop a fever or if symptoms persist.

TYLENOL: Plain Tylenol is safe for Headaches and general aches and pains. If a headache persists, or if you get no relief with Tylenol at the recommended dose, please contact our office.

ROBITUSSIN DM: Can be used for cough. You should call us if the cough is productive or if you have a fever with the cough.

MAALOX, TUMS, and ROLAIDS: Can be taken at the recommended doses for heartburn.

METAMUCIL: Can be taken for occasional constipation
